Every year the Diocese of Toronto puts forward a Social Justice Vestry Motion that churches around the diocese vote either to support or not.  These are topics that impact people's lives directly and daily.  Recent motions have been around housing, the climate crisis and living wages.

People often ask why we vote on these motions when it feels like we are doing no more than saying "yes" (or "no") into the ether, as it were.  However, when parishes support these motions, this enables our bishops and other church leaders to then engage local goverments.  When we support these motions, we are making our voice as followers of Jesus heard in the public square.  Though we may sense that voice is growing smaller, or quieter, it is still a voice that is listened to.

This year's motion reads as follows:

We, the parish of Church of the Ascension, Port Perry, in the Diocese of Toronto, urge the Province of Ontario to reverse the planned closure of safe consumption sites in Ontario, and to lift the ban on the creation of new sites, in order to expand life-saving harm reduction services to Ontarians.

Below you will find a download link to a 2 page background document.

This coming Sunday, February 9th, during coffee hour we will invite conversation and questions regarding this motion.

Let us prayerfully consider what God is calling us to in this moment.
