This past Monday evening the Scugog Poverty Coalition held its first community meeting in St John’s Hall since COVID intervened back in 2020. The meeting was well attended, especially by members of Ascension, and it gave an opportunity to introduce the planning committee and the direction envisioned for the coalition.
Its declared vision is that anyone experiencing poverty in Scugog is supported positively by its community. The mission statement is to reduce the stigma associated with poverty through education, advocacy and building a supportive community.
There were some interesting discussion points, especially from Karen Teed of Operation Scugog and Mona Emond of North House who have first hand experience of the problems poverty creates in our neighbourhood and the difficulties in resolving them.
Everyone who attended will be contacted shortly to see if they would be willing to sit on a sub-committee (Education, Advocacy or Collaboration) so that the Coalition can begin working towards some concrete goals. If you were unable to attend the meeting but feel you might like to be involved please don’t hesitate to contact me.
