As we each mark this day of remembrance by taking a moment to pause, to be in silence and to remember, let our hearts turn in hope towards peace. Though it can be a challenging and difficult hope to hold, especially when there seems to be so much anger and discord in our world, it is a hope we are called to pursue and hold as people of faith.
The best way to hold that hope is to enact peace ourselves. The author and priest Richard Rohr writes, "there is no path to peace, but peace itself is the path". Let us be, each and every day, people of peace. Let us enact in our choices and encounters peace, reconcilation, healing and love.
I share with you a poem written by our very own Catharine Midgley and her late husband Tom after their visit to the centotaph in November 2019.
May your moments of remembrance today be a blessing to you and to others.
Each year….
We place a poppy upon our breast.
Each year….
We reflect on those who rest.
Each year…..
We listen when the bugle sounds,
Remorsefully, knowing no one responds.
Each year…..
A silent moment, paid in respect,
Allowing the living time to reflect.
Each year…
The bugle rouse fails to call them home.
In Remembrance, their spirits are not alone.
