“Soups on Us” hangs up ladles for the summer. Resumes on October 11th, 2012.

Volunteers from four local churches and special needs adults served up delicious homemade soup, bread and dessert every Thursday at the Church of the Ascension hall.

A weekly, drop-in lunch for the entire community launched in Port Perry on October 27, 2011 and concluded on March 28, 2012 for the season. Soups on Us will resume on October 11th, 2012. “Soups on Us” is organized by four area churches and a local Parents’ Support Group. Volunteers from the churches and special needs adults served up delicious homemade soup, bread and dessert every Thursday at the Church of the Ascension hall, at 266 North St., Port Perry, from 12 noon to 1:30pm.

“We are so pleased that our adult children were be able to use their gifts and love of community service to work alongside the volunteers from the four Port Perry churches that have embraced this unique idea,” says Sue Bradley, a member of Port Perry’s Parents’ Support Group. “We enjoyed welcoming everyone who appreciated a steaming bowl of soup served up within walking distance of the downtown core.”

The lunch, a drop-in affair, was offered free of charge. Those who wished to make a donation were able to do so.

The participating churches included Emmanuel Community Church, Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Hope Christian Reform Church, Port Perry United Church and Church of the Ascension. In the fall we hope to welcome other churches to this ministry.
“I know all the four churches were really thrilled to offer such a concrete gift to the community, but also to create a partnership in the kitchen with our new friends,” says Cathy Cooper, a “Soups on Us” representative from Church of the Ascension. ” ‘Soups on Us’ is a warm and welcoming place to enjoy a quick, complementary lunch, and to support some hard workers in the kitchen.” We look forward to resuming in October!
